Uniting leaders to strengthen earthquake and tsunami preparedness throughout British Columbia

The ShakeOutBC earthquake drill is hosted annually by the British Columbia Earthquake Alliance (BCEA). It is an opportunity for individuals, communities, schools, and organizations to practice essential earthquake safety measures such as “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.”

About BC Earthquake Alliance

Championing earthquake preparedness in BC

Founded in 2010, the BC Earthquake Alliance (BCEA) is a Not-for-profit Society and our mission is to build a culture of earthquake and tsunami preparedness, through efforts such as the Great British Columbia ShakeOut.

Our vision

Before an earthquake or tsunami:
British Columbians take active steps to ready themselves, their families, their businesses, and their communities for earthquakes.

We Unite

The British Columbia Earthquake Alliance unites leaders to strengthen earthquake and tsunami preparedness in BC
We Unite

We Educate

We participate in a range of speaking engagements and deliver education throughout the province, including our virtual Community of Practice.
We Educate

We Prepare

We expand and strengthen the culture of earthquake and tsunami preparedness in BC. We also reach out to underserved communities.
We Prepare

Risk in BC

BritishColumbia is considered at high risk in relation to the rest of Canada. For example, on January 26, 1700, a magnitude 9 earthquake (similar to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake off the coast of Japan) shook the entire province as well as Washington, Oregon, and California, and generated a massive tsunami.

Why “Shake Out”?

The Great British Columbia ShakeOut is an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer during big earthquakes: “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” The ShakeOut has also been organized to encourage you, your community, your school, or your organization to review and update emergency preparedness plans.
